What Is PLA Material?

What Is PLA Bioplastic? Polylactic acid or polylactide (PLA) is a polyester made from renewable biomass, typically from fermented plant starch like corn, cassava, sugarcane or sugar beet pulp. PLA is a polyester (polymer containing the ester group) made with two possible monomers or ‘building blocks’: lactic acid and lactide.  Lactic acid can be produced by the bacterial fermentation of a carbohydrate source under controlled conditions. In this case, the carbohydrate source can be corn starch, cassava roots or sugarcane — making the process sustainable and renewable on an industrial scale. Research is still going to come up with an even more eco-friendly and cost-effective method of producing PLA biodegradable plastic .

Benefits of using PLA material

It’s common knowledge that the world’s oil reserves will eventually run out. As petroleum-based plastics are derived from oil, they will become more difficult to source and manufacture over time. However, PLA can be constantly renewed as it is processed from natural resources. Compared to its petroleum counterpart’s, PLA plastic boasts some great eco benefits. According to independent reports, producing PLA uses 65 per cent less energy and generates 63 per cent fewer greenhouse gases. PLA products are sensitive to heat and therefore only suitable for cold products. PLA products can be used with cold dishes and drinks of up to 40˚C. Our CPLA products are more heat-resistant. According to the EN-13432 composting standard, our PLA products are 100% biodegradable and compostable. In an industrial composting facility under optimum conditions (oxygen, moisture and heat), PLA will be fully composted within 8-12 weeks. Moreover, PLA is non-toxic and is made from a natural renewable resource.

PLA material has good mechanical and physical properties.It has unique advantages in the field of disposable utensils, food packaging materials and other disposable products.Its ability to fully biodegrade also meets the high environmental requirements of countries around the world, especially the European Union, the United States and Japan.
